Navy vet Jomaica De Villa used SkillBridge for a CBP internship, landing a job. A LinkedIn post details her success.

From Navy Veteran to CBP Paralegal: Jomaica De Villa's Inspiring Journey

Jomaica De Villa's path to a fulfilling career with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) began unexpectedly. A chance encounter with a CBP officer a decade earlier, while working in a San Francisco Bay Area restaurant, sparked her interest in the agency. Although unsure of the path forward, her ambition remained firm.

A Strategic Career Path

Following her father's advice, De Villa enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving honorably as an Aviation Electrician. Four years later, she continued her military career in San Diego, taking on additional responsibilities as a legal clerk and pursuing a Master's in Management with a Homeland Security focus. This proactive approach laid the groundwork for her future.

Leveraging the SkillBridge Program

Just before the end of her Navy contract, De Villa discovered a CBP SkillBridge opportunity in San Diego through a LinkedIn post. She contacted Jeffrey Jack, CBP's National Veterans Employment Program Manager, who guided her through the program's requirements. This internship allowed her to gain valuable experience in CBP's Fines, Penalties, and Forfeitures (FP&F) Division at the Port of Otay Mesa.

A Dream Realized

De Villa's SkillBridge internship proved pivotal. It allowed her to showcase her abilities, culminating in a full-time position as a Paralegal Specialist within two weeks of completing the program. She credits her success to her supervisors, colleagues, and Jack's support.

Words of Encouragement

De Villa's experience underscores the value of persistence, strategic career planning, and the power of networking. She wholeheartedly recommends that transitioning service members contact Jeffrey Jack to explore SkillBridge and other CBP veteran recruitment programs. Her supervisor, Gilbert Ayala, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, also praised De Villa's dedication and contributions.
