Notification of a Death in CBP Custody
The following information is shared in accordance with CBP policies and reporting requirements regarding deaths in custody.
Incident Summary
On October 25, 2024, at approximately 5:45 a.m., Border Patrol Agents (BPAs) encountered a Mexican citizen who was illegally in the U.S. near the Santa Teresa Port of Entry. The man reported feeling ill, experiencing throat pain, and requested water, which was provided. At approximately 5:51 a.m., he was transported with five others to the Santa Teresa Station (STN). During transport, he experienced medical distress. BPAs stopped the vehicle, and CPR was initiated at approximately 5:58 a.m. Emergency medical services (EMS) arrived at approximately 6:20 a.m. and transported the man to Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus (HPTC), where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 6:53 a.m. An autopsy conducted at approximately 11:17 a.m. determined the cause of death to be atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and the manner of death was ruled natural.
