$729,000 Counterfeit Cigarette Bust in Laredo

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Laredo, Texas, intercepted a massive shipment of counterfeit cigarettes, thwarting an attempt to introduce over $729,000 worth of illegal goods into the U.S. market.

The shipment, originating from Vietnam and arriving at the Miami Seaport, was flagged by CBP officers in early March. A subsequent thorough examination by CBP officers and import specialists revealed 17,500 cartons of cigarettes bearing counterfeit markings. The seizure was finalized on April 25th.

“Our CBP officers and import specialists remain vigilant in preventing fake goods from entering U.S. commerce,” stated Port Director Albert Flores of the Laredo Port of Entry. “Their expertise and collaboration with trademark owners ensure the authenticity of imported merchandise, leading to the swift detention and seizure of counterfeits. This protects both the U.S. economy and consumers.”

The Laredo Port of Entry, with representation from all ten Centers for Excellence and Expertise (CEEs), oversees the commercial importation of cigarettes. CBP has the authority to seize and destroy imported goods bearing infringing trademarks or copyrights, as well as those violating other regulations, including misclassification, false country-of-origin markings, health and safety concerns, and valuation discrepancies.

Combating Counterfeit Goods: A Threat to the U.S.

The trade in counterfeit and pirated goods significantly harms America's economy, impacting businesses, workers, and even national security. Importing counterfeit goods is illegal, and individuals, even unintentional importers, may face fines.

CBP encourages anyone with information on illegally imported counterfeit merchandise to submit an E-Allegation anonymously. Additionally, CBP's "Truth Behind Counterfeits" campaign educates consumers about the risks of purchasing counterfeit products.
