Fugitive Apprehended at Brownsville Port of Entry
Brownsville, Texas – United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Brownsville Port of Entry arrested a fugitive at the Gateway International Bridge. The individual, identified as 23-year-old Mexican citizen Yasser Ismail Abu Awwad Martínez, was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant for failure to appear on an original charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Successful Interception
On Friday, April 25, Mr. Martínez was selected for secondary inspection. Utilizing biometric verification and federal law enforcement databases, CBP officers confirmed his identity and the outstanding warrant issued by the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office in Olmito, Texas. Records indicate Mr. Martínez was initially arrested by the San Benito Police Department on December 31, 2023, for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
“This apprehension demonstrates our officers’ unwavering commitment to community safety,” stated Port Director Tater Ortiz of the Brownsville Port of Entry.
Transfer to Local Authorities
Following the confirmation of the warrant, CBP officers transferred Mr. Martínez to the custody of the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office.
CBP's Role in Law Enforcement
CBP officers regularly utilize the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database to identify individuals with outstanding warrants. Previous arrests based on NCIC information have included suspects wanted for various serious crimes, including homicide, escape, and various other offenses.
It is important to note that criminal charges are merely allegations, and individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
